Affiliate Scholars Program

The Affiliate Scholars Program welcomes scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences who wish to deepen their understanding of psychoanalytic theory through study at the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center. Affiliate Scholars are authors, professors, graduate students, and independent scholars. They take classes in psychoanalytic theory at the Psychoanalytic Center alongside psychiatrists and psychologists who are engaged in clinical psychoanalytic training. Both students and faculty find that the interdisciplinary composition of the classes is intellectually enlivening for all.

Each Affiliate Scholar’s course of study is tailored to their own particular project. In consultation with an advisor from the Psychoanalytic Center faculty, Affiliate Scholars select classes that will most enrich their ongoing research or writing, choosing from among regular course offerings on psychoanalytic theory and electives that vary from year to year. Affiliate Scholars may choose from offerings in our Adult or Child Psychoanalytic programs. Generally, they enroll in two classes per semester for a year, though often Affiliate Scholars have chosen to extend their time at the Psychoanalytic Center to two years. Monday classes are taught in person, and Thursday classes are taught over Zoom.

To apply to the Affiliate Scholars Program, please complete the application form linked here. The application process includes interviews with two members of our faculty. Tuition for full year courses is $1,968 each and eight-week electives $492 each; tuition is waived for Columbia graduate students. Tuition and fees listed here and elsewhere throughout this website are subject to change without prior notice. 

The completed application is due by April 30.

When your application is complete, you will be interviewed by a member of the Affiliate Scholar Program Committee. Applicants should be able to describe a scholarly project or an area of academic interest that they feel will be enriched by their study at the Center.
