A Columbia study aims find out which treatments work best to alleviate major depressive disorder and improve quality of life for individuals with breast cancer.
The best way to support women’s mental health is to implement policies that improve access to health care systems, family leave, food security, and housing, Dr. Elizabeth Fitelson said.
"We need better drugs and new drugs, not just the psychedelics and the ketamine, but new allotted treatments that are more effective," said Dr. David Hellerstein.
“The biggest limiting factor in getting to remission from depression postpartum is access to care, period—and it is worse for people who don’t have financial resources,” says Dr. Catherine Monk.
It might be that people prone to suicide turn to marijuana as a potential form of relief, rather than pot spurring them to suicidal thought and action, says Dr. Elie Aoun.
“Have you wished you were dead or have you had thoughts about killing yourself? A ‘yes’ warrants further questioning,” says Dr. Kelly Posner. “It’s the first thing that’s actually reduced suicide.”
"Depressed people tend to isolate themselves and I wanted to write a book that explains what it means to them to be supported in such a dark time," says Dr. Andrew Solomon.
"Many patients report rapid improvement in mood, anxiety and hedonic function, which is what initially attracted the psychiatric profession to the use of ketamine," said Dr. Joshua Berman.
Dr. Anne Marie Albano, who specializes in treating children, adolescents, and young adults, has seen an increase in the number of college-age students seeking therapy since the spring.
