While insomnia can be a symptom of psychiatric disorders, sleep problems can also contribute to the onset and worsening of problems such as depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation.
New research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center shows equine therapy can jump-start the healing process for veterans who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
"Many patients report rapid improvement in mood, anxiety and hedonic function, which is what initially attracted the psychiatric profession to the use of ketamine," said Dr. Joshua Berman.
Dr. Anne Marie Albano, who specializes in treating children, adolescents, and young adults, has seen an increase in the number of college-age students seeking therapy since the spring.
“Many people have preconceived notions about antidepressants some of which are based on the unfortunate stigma with mental health,” says Dr. Diana Samuel.
Columbia Psychiatry researchers have been working on solutions to remedy increased anxiety, depression, and even suicide as a direct result of the economic downturn.
"The possibility that Covid is going to completely change this period of their life, and they won’t ever get it back, is overwhelming for a lot of them,” Dr. Anne Marie Albano says of young people.
