Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Rep. Mike Lawler (NY-17) have introduced the Community Mental Wellness Worker Training Act to increase the availability of mental health services to the underserved.
In honor of Pride Month, the Columbia Gender & Sexuality Program (CGSP) offers a family-friendly guide to support LGBTQIA+ youth and caregivers and to events taking place across the city.
A study led by Matisyahu Shulman, MD, found that rapid administration of extended-release naltrexone was effective compared with the standard procedure used in the treatment of opioid use disorder.
“You can see this connection [to depression] in the general population, how strong it was, and that it builds up with each additional medication a person uses,” said Dr. Mark Olfson.
"We have a serious, national problem in terms of adequate recognition of psychiatric illnesses and their treatment," said Dr. John Mann. "We're missing most of these cases, that's the bottom line."
Initially, Seroquel seemed to have few side effects or complications. “The risks are far greater than I think has been represented,” said Dr. Mark Olfson.
The ‘Man O’ War’ program, a research project studying the effectiveness of horse therapy for veterans with PTSD, will be now fully managed by Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
Dr. Jonathan Stewart, who is currently running a wake therapy trial, only keeps patients awake for one night. “I couldn’t see a lot of people agreeing to stay in hospital for three nights," he said.
Dr. Drew Ramsey suggests using a sleep app to monitor how much or how little sleep you're getting. “When you see the digital data, it helps people enact behavioral change,” he says.
“Many people with severe mental illness who are not engaged in treatment because they deny anything is wrong would benefit from involuntary hospitalization,” said Dr. Paul Appelbaum.
