What is the Y-TEAM evaluation?
The Y-TEAM evaluation is a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and consultation service for families, conducted by professional, experienced clinicians at the New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, specifically the Y-TEAM staff. This clinical service includes a preliminary appointment, a structured clinical interview with the parent(s) and the child, and a feedback session with both parent(s) and the child. The evaluation lasts approximately 6 hours total. This entire evaluation process is free of charge.
The evaluation process occurs for all Y-TEAM services: intake for the CDU Day Treatment Program, intake for the Outpatient Clinic, Diagnostic Evaluation Assessments and Neuropsychological Assessments.”
Who is eligible for a Y-TEAM evaluation?
Youth aged 5-21 years who are struggling with mental health issues, have never received an evaluation or would like a second opinion regarding diagnosis and/or treatment, or are interested in enrolling in our Day Treatment Program or Outpatient Clinic.
At the CDU Day Treatment Program or the Outpatient Clinic, our team focuses on the following conditions in children, adolescents, and young adults:
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or worry
- Social anxiety
- Separation anxiety
- Depression
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
What happens after an evaluation?
At the end of a Y-TEAM evaluation, the parent(s) and the child will receive:
- Feedback on results of the evaluation including diagnoses
- Specific treatment recommendations
- Information about potential treatment programs at Columbia University associated clinical services
- Referrals to other mental health providers, if necessary
- Consultations by our staff with the referring provider as needed
Neuropsychological testing
The Y-TEAM diagnostic evaluation may identify clinical concerns that can be more effectively clarified with additional neuropsychological testing. This neuropsychology can include possible learning or attention disabilities, or difficultiesin other aspects of academic, social, or everyday functioning.
The Y-TEAM neuropsychological assessment provides recommendations for learning disability remediation, academic support/modifications, or specific types of school or treatment settings. Testing is offered free of charge and typically involves 2-3 visits. As the evaluations are conducted by advanced-level doctoral students (under supervision by a licensed neuropsychologist) as a component of their clinical training, there are a limited number of testing spots available.
