This webinar illustrated how patient-oriented translational research advances clinical practice for OCD. First, Dr. Simpson reviewed the clinical presentation of OCD and our first-line treatments followed by a discussion of how clinical trials can be used to address clinically important and relevant questions, leading to practice guidelines and treatment algorithms. Dr. Simpson highlighted two urgent clinical problems and how research is addressing them.

IMPACT-OCD

Improving Providers’ Assessment, Care Delivery and Treatment of OCD (IMPACT-OCD) is a workforce development program led by The Center for OCD and Related Disorders, The Center for Practice Innovations at Columbia Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute in collaboration with the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYS-OMH). The goal of this program is to improve clinician knowledge and skills in OCD care and raise awareness of OCD among clinicians, individuals with OCD and their families, and the general public.

Our program includes:

  • IMPACT-OCD Toolkit
    • Individuals and families, you will find educational materials about OCD for you and your loved ones, tools to use when seeking treatment, and access to a directory of treatment resources.
    • Behavioral health clinicians, you will find clinical assessments, clinical examples, an OCD treatment algorithm, and referral options for OCD-specific treatment.
  • IMPACT-OCD e-Learning courses with continuing education credits available to OMH, OASAS, New York State VA providers or a provider in a not-for-profit clinic/agency about detecting and diagnosing OCD, exposure and response prevention therapy, pharmacological treatment of OCD, and how to differentiate OCD and schizophrenia-spectrum disorder.
  • IMPACT-OCD support service gives clinicians working in OMH clinics the opportunity to receive expert feedback on assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of OCD from clinicians at the Center for OCD and Related Disorders

OCD Resources at Columbia Psychiatry

  • Cognitive Development & Neuroimaging Lab
    The Cognitive Development and Neuroimaging Lab, part of Columbia, offers research and treatment opportunities for children and adolescents with and without OCD. They conduct studies aimed at assessing how the brain changes across development.
  • CUCARD-Westchester
    The Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CUCARD) in Westchester is dedicated to improving the lives of children, adolescents, and young adults struggling with anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), school refusal, tic disorders, and trichotillomania.
  • Depression Evaluation Service
    The Depression Evaluation Service is an outpatient research and treatment clinic at Columbia that offers eligible participants a no-cost psychiatric evaluation and treatment for depression.     Founded by a group of people with OCD in 1986, the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) is an international not-for-profit organization that encompasses both OCD NY & OCD NJ. This is an especially good resource for gaining global information on the most up-to-date research findings and advocacy news. The IOCDF offers a directory of clinicians who specialize in treating OCD.

    OCD New York is a non-profit affiliate of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF).

    OCD New Jersey is a non-profit affiliate of the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF).
  • Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA)
    ADAA is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and cure of anxiety, depression, and related disorders and to improving the lives of all people who suffer from them. The ADAA offers a directory of clinicians who specialize in treating OCD and other related disorders.

    The Youth Anxiety Center is a clinical and research collaboration of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medical College that aims to understand how anxiety affects youth and emerging adults as they transition out of the home into independent living, and when needed, to provide services to facilitate a successful transition to college or work and independent living.
