Sarah Herzog, PhD

Overview
Dr. Sarah Herzog is a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University, and a faculty member in the Molecular Imaging and Neuropathology Division at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Herzog investigates neurobiological mechanisms underlying dysfunction in emotion regulation and stress responses that increase vulnerability to suicidal behavior. Her work integrates multimodal neuroimaging (MRI, MRS, PET), ecological momentary assessment (EMA), and psychophysiological methods to identify biomarkers linked to depression and suicide risk.
Dr. Herzog currently holds a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) K08 Career Development Award supporting her research using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) to examine alterations in cortical glutamate in depressed adults that contribute to emotional and cognitive risk factors for suicide. Her work is also supported by funding from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (NARSAD).
