Liam Christopher Butchart, MD, MA

Liam Butchart, MD, MA, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. In this role, he sees patients both in the acute care setting and more longitudinally through the Faculty Practice. Dr. Butchart has a particular clinical interest in the concurrent use of psychotherapy and medication to holistically address mental health conditions.

Dr. Butchart's scholarly work focuses on the intersection of mental health and the human aspects of illness, and how patient stories can inform treatment. He publishes regularly on literature, psychoanalysis, bioethics and narrative medicine, and particularly enjoys teaching and mentoring trainees of all levels.

Prior to his appointment at NYP/Columbia, Dr. Butchart completed his psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine-Mount Sinai Morningside/West, where was Chief Resident. He earned his medical degree from the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, and his undergraduate degree from the Colby College was in music. He also completed the Psychoanalytic Fellowship from Columbia University's Center for Psychoanalytic Teaching and Research.
