Dr. Halperin is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons and a Training & Supervising Analyst. Upon completing the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and the Adult Psychoanalysis Programs at the Center for Psychoanalytic Training & Research, Dr. Halperin joined the Center faculty. Dr. Halperin is a member of the Center's teaching faculty and has focused on child and adolescent development, psychoanalytic writing and formulating, and psychoanalytic process for advanced candidates focusing on emerging adulthood. She has joined the Columbia Academy for Psychoanalytic Education's faculty for training graduate analysts in supervisory and analytic skills as well as the Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy Program's faculty focusing on the psychological impact of medical illness. Dr. Halperin has supervised the clinical work of Center psychologists and psychiatrists at all levels of training as well as psychology interns at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Early interest in science lead Dr. Halperin to a place in Nobel Laureate Roslyn Yalow's, Women in Science Program in immunology at Montefiore Hospital. Following a Ford Foundation research grant at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center on tobacco-related carcinomas, Dr. Halperin pursued a Master's in Human Genetics and enjoyed genetics research and counseling positions at Mt. Sinai's Prenatal Diagnosis practice and at the Neurogenetic Diseases Center. An interest in addressing the psychological needs of these patients and their families spurred Dr. Halperin to further graduate study. Trained in the scholar-practitioner model at Columbia University, Dr. Halperin earned her Ph.D in Clinical Psychology. Her Master's research involved parental compliance with child psychotherapy and her Doctoral research, conducted at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, addressed the psychological adjustment of adolescent cancer survivors and their families. Dr. Halperin's doctoral clinical training involved treating both child and adult patients as well as couples. On internship, she rotated through inpatient psychiatry at St. Luke's Hospital and worked in university mental health treating undergraduate and graduate students at Counseling & Psychological Services at Columbia University. Dr. Halperin completed a Fellowship in substance misuse at Smither's (now, the NY Addiction Center at Roosevelt Hospital). Dr. Halperin attained additional training in CBT, DBT psychotherapy modalities as well as ongoing couples therapy training at The Ackerman Institute for the Family. Once in an established private practice, Dr. Halperin's interest in deepening and expanding her clinical skills once again lead to her pursuing further training in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis and that began her longstanding professional affiliation with Columbia Psychoanalytic in 2004.
