Research in this department focuses on the contribution of psychological and behavioral factors to the onset, progression and management of physical and mental disease. As part of an examination of the mechanisms by which psychological risk factors such as hostility, depression, and anxiety contribute to heart disease, departmental research explores a psychophysiological model of coronary disease that identifies the autonomic nervous system as the link between psychological factors and atherosclerosis. In contrast to most of the research divisions, Behavioral Medicine is located not at PI, but in nearby offices at NYPH.
