Educators, Police Work to End Child Suicide

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15- to 19-year-olds

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15- to 19-year-olds -- a statistic that was enough to prompt the Baltimore County Police Department to promote prevention.

Law enforcement, education and military officials, along with private practitioners, gathered Wednesday to look for new strategies to deal with depression and suicide, especially among children.

"It's really disturbing that people think that kids can't suffer from depression, kids aren't anxious and that kids don't get depressed. Really, they are, and they're looking for people to talk to, and so the more tools we have to be able to sort out what needs to be done and help kids who are suffering every day -- that's always a good thing," said school counselor Sarah Fitzsimmons...

..Dr. Kelly Posner, a child and adolescent psychology professor from Columbia University, said it's a problem that shouldn't be taken lightly.
