The Intensive Outpatient Program at Columbia University Medical Center provides outpatient management of adult patients with acute psychiatric disorders. It offers multidisciplinary treatment by a staff of psychiatrists and psychologists with expertise in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, geriatric psychiatry, crisis management, family therapy and women's issues. The program also provides an alternative to or transition from inpatient or partial hospital care. It is intended for patients in need of more intensive therapy than routine outpatient care. The average length of stay is four to eight weeks, after which patients return to care in their local communities. (We welcome collaboration with referring psychiatrists and therapists, and can flexibly tailor each patient's treatment plan to accommodate the degree of involvement desired during the acute illness.)
