Dual Diagnosis Inpatient Care

The Dual Diagnosis Inpatient Care program features:

Treatment for individuals with complex psychiatric and substance use disorders;

Individualized attention from a team of renowned experts; and

Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and treatment consultation.

The Department of Psychiatry at the Columbia University Medical Center of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is an internationally recognized leader in clinical care, training, and research. The Columbia Neuropsychiatric Service at the Garden Unit is a premier inpatient program, offering outstanding clinical evaluation and treatment by senior faculty and a full staff of expert clinicians.

The Program

Inpatient psychiatric care for patients with dual psychiatric and substance use disorders is delivered on the Garden Unit (9-Garden North).

Patients admitted to the Columbia Neuropsychiatric Service at the Garden Unit are cared for by an experienced attending psychiatrist who coordinates all aspects of evaluation and treatment. Patients receive a thorough diagnostic evaluation which includes detailed structured interviewing and psychological testing. Every patient receives a complete medical evaluation, with expert neurologists and other specialists readily available at the Medical Center, as needed.

In addition to expert psychiatric, psychopharmacological and medical care, the program includes both individual and group psychotherapy for addiction illness, availability of twelve-step fellowship meetings, cognitive behavioral therapy for depressive and anxiety disorders, and individual and/or family psychotherapy. The inpatient treatment team maintains close contact with the referring physician, who will receive a full report of the patient’s hospital evaluation and treatment once the patient is discharged.

Treatment on the Garden Unit includes the highest quality nursing care, from a core group of senior psychiatric nurses, occupational and recreational therapy, the availability of physical therapy, if needed, and an exercise therapist.

The Setting

The Neuropsychiatric Service at the Garden Unit is located on the recently renovated 9-Garden North floor at the Columbia site of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The Garden Unit is a 24-bed, traditional, locked, acute care inpatient psychiatry unit. Some patients on the Garden Unit have only psychiatric problems while others have dual psychiatric and substance use disorders.

Individuals on the Neuropsychiatric Service at the Garden Unit stay in comfortable, private rooms with private bathrooms and large picture windows, some of which have views of the Hudson River. If desired, patients may transfer to the McKeen Pavilion as their condition improves to the point that they no longer require inpatient psychiatric services but still require detoxification services.
