The Intensive Outpatient Program at Columbia University Medical Center is a clinical teaching service of the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry providing outpatient management of adult patients with acute psychiatric disorders at affordable, but not sliding scale, fees. It offers multidisciplinary treatment by a staff with expertise in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, geriatric psychiatry, crisis management, group therapy and family therapy.

The program also provides an alternative to or transition from inpatient or partial hospital care. The comprehensive group program is intended for patients in need of more intensive therapy than routine outpatient care. The average length of stay is four to eight weeks, after which patients return to care in their local communities. (We welcome collaboration with referring psychiatrists and therapists, and can flexibly tailor each patient's treatment plan to accommodate the degree of involvement desired during the acute illness.)
